Retelling the story of Squanto, the legendary friend of the Pilgrims, is one of my favorite traditions of the Thanksgiving season.
Having faced years of hardship and sacrifice for their faith, it appeared that the Pilgrims would meet a tragic end in a strange land far from home. More than half of them died before the first winter was over.
Then, miraculously, Squanto appears and offers them the life-sustaining help they so urgently need. Squanto, like the Pilgrims, was no stranger to great hardship and tragedy. He could have been bitter. He could have refused to help. Yet he reaches out in kindness and friendship.
What an amazing person! What an example for anyone who is struggling! What a powerful legacy for every American to treasure and pass on!
Let's keep a great tradition alive --
Thanksgiving is a perfect time to reach out and help someone in need
