What many don't fully realize is that it took more than eight long years after the Declaration was signed before the Revolutionary War was won. The price early patriots paid for their liberty, and ours, was astounding.
The signers of the Declaration of Independence paid a particularly heavy price. Their signatures branded them as traitors, and many were hunted and persecuted. As they signed, they expressed their "firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence." And they mutually pledged to each other their Lives, their Fortunes, and their sacred Honor.
This is a great time of year to learn more about the heroes who signed the Declaration and the sacrifices they made. The biographies linked below are excellent, but are written for adults. It would be time well spent to discuss them with your older children, and to tell stories about them to your younger children or grandchildren.
