As a mom, have you ever paused to consider what you want your children to know about America? Our family has an evolving list and we try to make time to teach the things that really matter.
We're starting to realize that opportunities to teach our children are all around us. For example, have you ever thought of a sporting event as an opportunity to teach your children about America?
Take the NBA Finals. Last night Julia Dale, a 10-year-old “singing sensation”, sang the National Anthem for game 2 of the finals between the Miami Heat and the Dallas Mavericks.
A rousing performance like Julia’s can set the stage for a discussion of the National Anthem, what it means, and why it’s important. In our family, we’ve even been known to mute commercials to talk about things like that.
Or, you could set aside some “family night” time for a special discussion of the National Anthem and what it means to you. Flag Day is coming up on June 14, and this is a great time to talk about the significance of our "star spangled banner."
In the meantime, here is 10-year-old Julia Dale and her amazing performance.
