Signing Away Our Fundamental Rights as Citizens
This week, as President Obama signed the highly controversial National Defense Authorization Act, he said in a signing statement, "“The fact that I support this bill as a whole does not mean I agree with everything in it. I have signed this bill despite having serious reservations with certain provisions that regulate the detention, interrogation and prosecution of suspected terrorists.”
Senator Bernie Sanders also issued a statement, "The legislation could also give future presidents the authority to throw American citizens into prison for life without charges or a trial. This bill also contains misguided provisions that in the name of fighting terrorism essentially authorize the indefinite imprisonment of American Citizens without charges. While we must aggressively pursue international terrorists and all of those who would do us harm, we must do it in a way that protects the Constitution and the civil liberties which make us proud to be Americans."
This bill is truly dangerous and denies United States citizens rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
In the words of Senator Rand Paul, "It puts every single American citizen at risk."
As mothers, and as citizens, we must:
* Study the Constitution
* Know our rights
* Teach them to our children
* Seek and vote for leaders who will work to preserve and restore the Constitution.
